Blog8: To Be or Not To Be

Today we read an article Medical Technology and Bioethics. The problems of medical technology come into the picture and some moral and philosophical problems are brought up.

As the development of human society, the average life time of human beings extend to be much longer than just little more than twenties. Even if our ancestors live in the most environmental friendly circumstance, we still live longer now.

Perhaps this phenomenon is because of evolution but it is not important. Here comes another point in which we have modern medical technology to make us live healthier. The time of expend human life even longer is around the corner and we have the hope to keep longer life with the help of medical technology. In the way of living longer, matters like clone and maybe euthanasia (end life with medicine legally with the help of physician) appears. These issues were discussed among our group. Whether one have the right to decide when to end his or her life in the situation of one is suffering from serious disease which is hardly to be cured.

How long we expect to live is another issue we think about. In my view I do not want to live to long like hundreds of years or even more because I think it is too boring while Miss Waheeda came up with a new point that the living condition affected. This is the key element which influences the result that I draw. I regard long life is boring because that when I am old and useless, life does not make too much sense.

It is really good thing to think about it, only think can lead to improvement.

  1. the length of life is hard to control. even though i do not want to live for so long a life, i would rather not to end my life by euthanasia. hence, for me i choose to live natually.

  2. Actually, I want to live a long life...
However,I do not want to achieve this dream by operations. It will make me another person, I think.
So my point is similar with Wang Yu. I choose to live naturally, too.

  3. Thank you for your blog, Suxu! I really appreciate your idea that you do not want to live too long. For a long period of time, people have been looking for methods to make their lives longer. However, there are not so many people who share the same idea with you. As for me, you opinion on this issue is quite rational. I also believe that if we live too long, our life would be boring, when we are too old to do anything we like. Nevertheless, though it might be selfish, I still would like to see that the people I love can have longer lives.

  4. Thank you for your sharing, Suxu! It is a very interesting topic, isn’t it? As it is also very controversial, it seems that there is no answer for it. Yes, when one gets old, it may not be convenient for him to do things and life seems boring to him. However, his families or relative may want him to live longer because he means a lot for other people- in other words, it may not be true but I think one’s live is not totally owned by oneself. As for me, my greatest dream is not that I can live longer, but is that I can keep young and never grow old for good.

  5. Personally view, I am supportive of euthanasia. Also, I do not think it is good for those scientists to research how to make human beings live longer. Be born naturally, be grow up naturally and be dead naturally. If a person just maintains breath but cannot do anything, I think, this person's existence does not make sense and it is painful for himself or herself to live.
