As we all know, on
the last Saturday in March every year, there is an activity called ‘Earth
Hour’. In 2012, it is on the 31st in March. It is held by
the World Wildlife Fund. Every year, hundreds of countries participate in this
world’s largest single campaign for our planet. The campaign starts by turning
off your lights for an hour during 8:30 p.m.to 9:30 p.m. It really benefits our
planet a lot.
With the biodiversity and the natural
habitats are disappearing at a greater rate than ever before and with the
climate-related extreme weather appears frequently, it is high time for the
world taking actions to raise people’s awareness to save the energy as well as
protect the environment. Though, it seems that our lives cannot change a lot
with the little action of ‘Earth Hour’. I think if the entire person has the
awareness to do something, we can virturely create a sustainable future for our
generation. It is obvious that we are depleting resources far faster than the
nature is replenished and during ‘Earth
Hour’, it converts us a message of hope and a message of action. “I will if you
will” is the slogan of 2012 ‘Earth Hour’, which really impresses me deeply for
it gives me a voice, a hope to work together with my compatriot to create a
better future.
On the 31st in March in
2012, I also participate in this activity with my roommates. During that time,
we turned off the entire electrical appliance in our room. We were in
dark then. At first, we feel not very adaptable to the circumstance, to break
the strange atmosphere, we talked about our interesting trivia in China. We
hadn’t talked deeply to each other like that night before. We even talked until
10:30p.m.which was beyond the limit time of ‘Earth Hour’. Finally, we slept
with full happiness. Instead of playing the computer games or playing the
mobile phone for many hours in the night, opening the hearts to each other is
really an original and simple activity, but the happiness it takes to me is far
more than the former. This action aware I to notice something more meaningful
and something deserved us to pursue. During the ‘Earth Hour’, I gained a lot.
Though some people said that we can save far
less compared with we are depleting. Even the action of turning off a working
machine suddenly, the instantly powerful electric current can do extremely harm
to the machine itself. Meanwhile, some celebrities want to enhance their reputation
from the action of protecting the environment, so they apply themselves to be
the representatives of the ‘Earth Hour’ by making some hypocritical
environmental show, which is meaningless and decent. So there appears some
voice against the ‘Earth Hour’. Though this kind of action really disappointed
many people. The final objective and belief of creating a sustainable future
won’t be changed. At least, I’ll keep the ‘Earth Hour’ as a habit, not only in
a frequency of yearly but monthly or promoting more.
I really have a strong curiosity about what
can be achieved when we all come together for a common cause, ‘Earth Hour
‘gives us a chance to dare the world to save the planet and we are in a
collective display of commitment to a better future. I truly want to appeal for
the ‘Earth Hour’. You can enjoy the hour, absorb its ramifications and savor
the simplicity. One action can make a difference to the world. I do hope we all
can make ‘Earth Hour ‘a habit to build a wonderful future.
I think your blog is rather meaningful, Xiaoxu. (^_^) I feel a little shameful as I did not know that 31st March this year was the “Earth Hour” until I read your blog. (>_<) That’s too bad! I think what you did was remarkable! As for me, it is really difficult to stop using my laptop or mobile phone for a long time, which may make me feel boring or uncomfortable. However, it is necessary for all of us to save the energy, so it is good to take part this activity! Besides, just as you say, it is a good time to communicate with each other and deepen our friendship! Since now I have known something about the “Earth Hour”, I’ve decided to join in this activity next time! Thank you for your lovely blog! I love it very much! (^o^)
ReplyDeleteI fully agree with you that we should create a sustainable future for our generations. The environment situation is getting worse, it's high time for all the individuals to take actions! However, I think the 'Earth Hour' is more a show than meaningful activity, since things done on that hour such as flyng kongming lanterns which may do more harm to the earth. Environment protection is something that should be done every day. Even the tiniest thing can mean something if with the accumulation. In addition, you are so cute to make effort in that special time.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy reading your blog. I think the topic is profound and the content is quite funny. Nowadays, since extreme climatic phenomena occur frequently, our human beings do need to reflect ourselves. When we randomly destroy the environment, we do not realize that we are actually undermining our own wellbeing. If this world is covered with flood or sand, how can we live happily? When we talk about global warming, deforestation and so on, we tend to think it is the government not us to take constructive actions to combat them. However, such problems concern us all. If everyone begrudges his effort to ameliorate current situations, the situations will never be fundamentally changed. Actually, our hostel joined this meaningful activity as well. When all lamps were turned off, the room was shrouded in darkness. I instantaneously sensed that my heart was calmed down. I like that feeling. The peace and gratitude saturated my mind, as a result, I spontaneously beginning contemplating the future of our home—earth. I am not an environmental activist, but at that time, I thought my sympathy and compassion towards this world were completed stimulated. I think via our concerted effort, environmental issues will be solved smoothly one day.
ReplyDeleteYou have given good ideas for Earth Hour. Interesting reading
