I like looking up into the sky, seeing the rain drops falling down or appreciating the beautiful sunshine. I like the marshmallow-like clouds, the stars and the moon. All in all, I like nature. That’s why I always brush my teeth and apply medicine to my eyes on the balcony. Days ago, I had found that the moon was very bright and beautiful. I didn’t know it is actually called the “supermoon” until I saw the reports about it. One of the reports said: “the moon is as close as it ever gets to us at the moment, making it look up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than when it’s at the far end of its oval orbit.” However, because of the location of our apartment, the moonlight can’t go in and brighten my room like it ever did when I was in China.
In my hometown, I lived in the loft of our house and my bed was placed under the skylight. I liked this arrangement very much because I could appreciate the sky every night before I fell asleep. In Chinese literature, the moon is used as a typical symbol to express one’s feelings of homesickness. The most famous piece is probably a Tang poem called “feel homesick at a quiet night”. Influenced by this culture background, I always find the scenes of my childhood flood into my mind every time I appreciate the moon. One of the most impressive scenes occurred at the night of my birthday. I went sleep early that night because I was disappointed by the cloudy sky. Every year I would look forward to that day because it was mid-autumn festival and it is supposed to have the best moon of a year in Chinese culture. Falling asleep with sadness, I woke up at midnight by the moonlight. The moonlight was so bright that everything in the room can be seen clearly. I can't help opening the skylight, sitting on the windowsill and looking outside. The moonlight was very soft and attractive, making everything in it seemed cute and peaceful. I was lost in such a beautiful view…
I don't know why I never see such bright moon again even at the night which is considered to have the brightest moon. Maybe it can only be explained by the old saying “ the moon is brighter when seen at hometown”(月是故鄉明). As now I’m far away from home, I start to realize this sentence deeply.
I feel so regretful that I miss the chance to see the supermoon. Actually, I seldom watch moon because I don't feel homesick when I see it. I am so happy that when you feel homesick, the moon is accompanying with you. PS:I like the saying "the moon is brighter when seen at hometown."
ReplyDeleteYour words did affect me. I find many similarities between us from the blog, such as we all like nature and may feel homesick when staring at the moon. In my eyes, the moon is the masterpiece of God, Father Almighty, Creator of heavens and the earth. Every time i stare at it, i will feel peaceful and experience a spiritual baptism. I like your blog~
ReplyDeleteafter reading your blog, i feel that i am cold-blooded. i also saw the supermoon that you mention. but i don't feel homesick at all. i probably lost the abolity to appreciate. maybe it is because my emotion is so deep that i have become dull.
ReplyDeleteI also saw the super moon that night and it reminded me of Mid Autumn Festivals that I spend at home every year. At the particular night, all the families will gather together, enjoy mooncakes and chat with each other happily being drenched in the bright and soft light of the moon. It is memorable. Anyway, I was moved by your words and I enjoyed reading your blog very much!
ReplyDeleteThe moon has always this mystical quality that enchants people through the ages. It has a timeless quality and eternal charm. Poets from around the world have captured the beauty and romance that it exudes. A good blog, Haoyan.
