Blog 1: Forage for Food on Your Own

On 9th January 2012, we group one had a heated discussion on the topic of the school and education. I could tell from the exciting classroom atmosphere that everyone had taken an active part in it and we had started to think about something on our own and express it out properly, which was quite different from the way we learn before, in my opinion.

In China, I kept in step closely with my teachers and only received what they stated in front of me. How much I learnt depended on how much they taught. This pattern of teaching is called "spoon feeding", which I think will surely kill the students' imagination and innovation ability. Students taught in this method would have starved to death without their teacher.

So what's the solution of this issue? There is an ancient Chinese saying goes: "It's better teaching one to fish than giving him fish" and I consider it as a truth. No matter how well you've been looked after by your parents or teachers now, there must be one day that you have to become independent and rely on only yourself. Whether you like it or not, it's the very fact, it's life, and you have to learn to accept it.

Thus let's prepare ourselves well for the arrival of that day and begin with owning an independent mind. We should try to consider a thing from several aspects, not just from an obvious one. Then do our best to let others comprehend what's in our mind and impress them by, for example, using figurative paragraphs or body language. And we all should have that courage to open our mouth to talk, since English is a living language. Day by day we'll make progress unconsciously and the destination is just around the corner.

  3. I agree with you on this idea, and I love this ancient Chinese saying, too. It is meaningful. Well, the education style in China is so different from the one in some other countries. With this style, we may master the basic skills of the subjects well, but we might never gain the innovation ability at the same time. We learn well but we can’t create. That is too bad. So as we are now studying abroad, we should try to think more and practice more to become a creative person!

    1. I wondered if the saying is correct or not because I translated it into English myself. So excuse me if the translation is not authentic. Thank you for your appreciation!^;^

  5. I agree with your views. We should learn how to study individually.I know in China,we have little time for independent study,we are nearly drown under the homework. So it is urgent for us to improve this skill.Because both in the university and workplace,we need to do something on our own.No one will teach you,and if you fail to this task. You will just be dropped out. There is no excuse for your failure. Therefore it is important for us to form a good habit of independent study.

    1. I agree on your view that one needs independence as long as he step his feet into the society. Otherwise he cannot survive in this challenge-full environment. Thank you, Jiangze!

  6. Yes just learning the English language is not good enough. You need to be able to use it in the spoken and written form. You all are well grounded in the technical part of the language but this is only one aspect of learning the language. It should be a communication tool for you to use to help you attain your goals.
We give you many opportunities to express yourself in English--so do try to speak up in class. It`s alright to make mistakes--we learn from our mistakes. Practice makes perfect!
