Blog5: the Crossroads of My Life

I’m sure that almost all of us have encountered this problem- which major to choose in our four-year campus life at NUS-recently. ”Just choose what you like best” the words said by the professors and acquaintances I’ve asked for advice make the problem confusing me a lot seem very easy to solve. However, it is still fairly hard to choose because I even don't know which subject I have interest in.

Actually, I think that just following our interest when choosing the field of study may not be sensible enough, since things which are interesting and enjoyable when they are hobbies can become both unprofitable and unsatisfactory while turning to professions. Therefore, we should think twice before we decide as well as make the decision not only according to our interest but also career prospects.

Nevertheless, it’s really hard to tell which profession is truly promising. Modern world is changing every minute, let alone four years. The specialties we think are good enough today may even don’t have the possibility for us to find a job four years later. Choosing the major quite needs our long-term vision.

In addition, the name of a profession may puzzle us because its curriculum is probably not like what we have expected by judging from the major’s name. Take chemical engineering as an example, one of my seniors chose it due to the love for chemistry, while he disappointedly found it filled with classes in physics but not chemistry after he was enrolled. From this perspective, we should collect enough information about the curricula of our possible choices before the final decision.

The above are all my thoughts on how to make a proper decision when choosing the field for undergraduate study. No matter what speciality is finally chosen, I think the most important thing for me is to make myself like it and learn it well. After all, it's difficult to change the external conditions but it’s easy to change ourselves.

Last but not the least, hope everyone could get the ideal major:)

  1. It`s easy to say"Choose what you like best", but difficult to follow this advice. Putting it so simply may be misleading for some. Furthermore many students don`t really know what they like best. Besides interest, there are so many things students must be aware of, such as career prospects as you`ve mentioned. So making a final decision is indeed not an easy one. You`ve come to a major crossroad in your life. The world is changing very rapidly so in today`s context, it can be quite difficult to think or plan long-term. We should all be aware of this and be able to adapt accordingly. Choose wisely and make the most of whatever choice/s you`ve made. Life should not be one of regrets.

  2. Yes, I am quite approval of your thoughts especially what you have stated in the fourth paragraph. I find out that unless we do try to know what every major is about, otherwise we do not have the right to say no to any of them. As we know, undergraduate courses are all suppose to be hard- i.e, none of the major is easy. However, interest can be developed on the way you take the course. Some major may seem not so attractive to us, but we may get to love it gradually.

  3. Reality always seems so far away from our original expect.I also feel really confused about I am going to learn in the future. I have a great passion about architecture, but I think i will never have the chance to study it for my whole life. Sometimes reality is really cruel.

  4. Actually I think we really don't have to confuse for too long about what we really major in. When we graduate from NUS,the tool we compete with others is our ability. Every major can nurture our ability, and whatever major you are in,as long as you learn well, you can surely find a very good job.You are the pride of NUS,and I also trust you because you are really a very outstanding student.Just choose what you don't hate for I trust you have the ability to capture any subject.Pump it!!!Haoyan~~~I trust you~~

  5. Well, now I am having the same problem as you. Choosing major is a tough task for me as well. I am told by some friends or relatives that some of the majors that I like are not so promising, and they suggest me to think it over. I think when we are choosing our majors, we must know as much information as we could first, then we may consider our interests, our talents and the future of the majors and finally make a decision. It is difficult to choose, but I believe that you can choose your favourite one!

  6. Choosing major is really a tough task. I have already suffered it in China. At that time, I swore I would never want to do that again. However, I have to go through the pain again. Even though it was just nine months after my last choice, I really find some changes. Once I thought I would never choose to learn computing, but now I am quite interested in the school of computing. Real life is a funny thing, isn't it? I will not never know what I will choose until I make a decision in the last minute.

  7. I had suffered from choosing a major for two weeks last summer. It is not expected that I need to ‘enjoy’ it again. Until now, I still do not make the ultimate decision. As a matter of fact, I hate all faculties of science and engineering and computing. I often failed in mathematics, physics and biology exams in my high school. I am terrified of them. So, my major work is choosing a major that I am not that hate. As for starting salary, it depends on whether or not you work hard in school and company but majors themselves, I think.
