Blog 5: Personal Space

With the world exploding population, we seem to have less and less personal space. Nowadays it is a common problem bothering people that all too often we may feel disturbed and uncomfortable by others encroaching on your personal space , which happens quite frequently especially in a crowded occasion, such as a MRT station or an elevator. Thus, it becomes more and more difficult to maintain personal spaces especially in such a modern society.

Although personal space highly varies with different cultures or individuals, there is one thing in common that it is such an essential factor to protect ourselves from intimate or unacceptable physical contacts. For example, my personal distance is a little longer than the average because I will easily tend to feel being offended and lose the sense of security when unfamiliar persons get closed to me. Therefore, even when I was queuing in a line, I would try to keep a long distance from the person in front of me. Moreover, I am always careful to avoid joining a crowd when I am going to get vehicles. However, sometimes entering one’s personal space can also be an indication of familiarity for the reason that we would like to get quite closed to our friends.

Since personal space can strongly influence feelings of people and even indicate some facts, it is significant for us to pay more attention to it.

  1. "With the world exploding population, we seem to have less and less personal space." I do agree with this sentence you put forward. Nowadays, with the development of monitoring techniques, we seem to have less personal space. What's more, many people are not quite aware to pay attention to keeping their personal space. In my opinion, personal space is something extremly important for a single person, and represents freedom some times. Thus, we'd better lay more emphasis on getting it. To sum up, i like your blog very much.

  2. I really agree with you on your idea of personal space. I do not like being too near to the people that I am not familiar with, either. I think it is rather uncomfortable and sometimes I feel a bit embarrassed and nervous. As for the personal space in the public places such as the underground and the bus, I have a good way to avoid body touch. When I was in senior 3 in high school, I took underground to school and it was always crowed. Every time I had to take an underground, I let other people get on first, and then got on it. In that case, I could stand in front of the door and face it, so I could avoid the unpleasant touch on the underground. I think that it is quite an effective way.

  3. I think I can understand exact what your feeling is. I'm also the one whose personal space is quite a large area. Certainly, it is only for people that I am not familiar with. Actually, I do feel that people's personal space become narrower because of the western culture's influence these days. However, altough the physical distance between individuals has shortened, civilians' hearts are further away from each other.

  4. I'm strongly agree on your opinion. The personal space is very important for everyone,we are not celebrity,so we should have the right to have much more personal space which is not offended by others. People is a combination of different kinds of characters, when they meet the public, they will show a kind of character, when they meet their friends, they will show a kind of character, but I think only when people stay alone can they think about the life and the future. The personal space is used to adjust ourselves to adapt to the changing lives.May be we share the room with others or we have so many things to do everyday that we cannot have enough personal space to release ourselves.I do hope you can find some hapiness and free in the limited personal space now.
