Every time I see van Gogh’s paintings, I will be deeply attracted and moved by his masterpiece ‘the starry night’. Though van Gogh is a Post Impressionist, this painting isn’t limited into the field of impression. Van Gogh put more emotion into it. The reason why people are always moved by van Gogh’s painting is not only his consummate painting skill but also the exquisite emotion emerged in his painting.
This famous painting depicts the view outside his sanatorium room window at Saint-Remy-de-Provence at night. Frankly speaking, most of parts of this painting are van Gogh’s imagination, because it is created in daytime. According to the analysis by academic artist, the view of starry night is actually van Gogh’s mental world. There is a peaceful village under a starry night, a red and brown olive tree covers the half of the painting.
The first time you see the painting, you will feel all the objects in the painting are in a mess. What make you feel messy are the rotary lone lines and separated short lines which are a painting method. Van Gogh uses the repeated rotary lines to express his complex emotion and to release the sadness and sorrow that cannot be understand by others. This result makes the scenery alive, build a starry circumstance and give you resonance with his subject, which is a characteristic feature of the painting.
Though many people think that van Gogh has some mental disorder during his last time and this ‘starry night’ only expresses the restless and anxious emotion of him. I think during this time, what van Gogh sees most is hope, he hopes to see light behind the dark sky. So he painted many stars, he hopes the light of them can really set him free and make he escape from the limitation of religion. That’s my opinion about this painting.
The reason why I like it is that it makes me peaceful and senses the hope. I do hope all of you can sense some moving elements from van Gogh’s works because he is a great artist who uses his soul to paint. All above is the inspiration and reflections that ‘the starry night’ brings to me.

'The Starry Night' is one of the paintings that I like most as well. In fact,Van Gogh is my favourite artist apart from Michelangelo. I admire his great talent for art and sympathize with him because of his tragic life. I also like the picture book and the movie named 'The Starry Night'. I like you comments to 'The Starry Night', they are good! I also sincerely recommand you to watch that movie, hope you could like it!
ReplyDeleteWow, I can clearly see your love for Van Gogh’s paintings, even your desktop background is the Starry Night, as I recall! (^_^) Most of Van Gogh’s paintings are fantastic and I love them very much, too! My favourite painting of all his works is Still Life:Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers. Whenever I see this masterpiece, I am always deeply impressed by the passion and strength that I feel from it. By the way, I have found out that we are sharing many similarities in the preference, such as the love of Van Gogh’s paintings and the music Canon! That is amazing! (^o^)
ReplyDeleteI think the colors he used are amazing. It is mixed and therefore strongly expresses his emotion, but it is still a silent scene. I know it is a little weird by saying this picture is both silent and emotional. Maybe only a genius can do this.
ReplyDeleteJi Yi has found similar interests with Xiaoxu. The loneliness in this painting is undeniable. Have you wondered why he painted 7 stars?
