Blog 8:The Superhero Films

Through all these years, the superhero films have been playing an important role in the film industry. The protagonists in many Hollywood movies are superheroes, such as Superman, Spiderman and so on. The superheroes are the ones who have superpowers and dedicate to protecting the public. They are great and their stories are always exciting. However, I was not interested in these films before, as I thought they were too idealistic and also too boring.

I have held this idea for almost six years until I saw the movie Marvel’s the Avengers, which changed my thought totally. Last Saturday, I went to the cinema to see this film with my host family. I really enjoyed it very much and I found that it is a great lost that I have not seen any superhero movies before. Marvel’s the Avengers tells a story about how a superhero group called the Avengers saved the earth and protected the human-beings from the aliens. In this movie, every superhero had unique superpower, but at first they were not united and were nearly beaten by their enemies. Luckily, they finally found that they have to fight together. Otherwise, they could not win the battle. Therefore, they put aside all the disagreements and fought for the same purpose—which was, to drive the aliens away from the earth. In the end, they did it, of course.

This movie is rather attractive. After watching it, I was eager to know more about all the superheroes in the Avengers. Thus, I went to the Internet and watched The Iron Man on line later that night. The story of the Iron Man was totally different from what I imagined before. At first, I thought the Iron Man was just like the Spiderman, who had a kind of superpower that made him different from others. However, the truth was that the Iron Man was just an ordinary person. It was the high-tech equipment that he put on his body made him into a superhero.

After watching these movies, I got to know that the superhero movies are not as boring as I thought before. These movies are not only made up of all the violent acting scenes, but they also contain some profound meanings or sciences and technologies. After all, I would like to see more superhero movies from now on.

Blog 9: Love Actually...

Love Actually…
Love actually is fearless. Love actually is an apology. Love actually is forgiveness. Love actually is inspiration. Actually, “Love Actually” is a Britain movie I have just watched.
This movie is composed of ten stories. It describes love from many aspects. A stepfather encouraged his little stepson to chase after the lovely girl whom the boy liked. A wife forgave her husband for his affair with his secretary. A man who was attracted by his friend’s wife buried his love deeply in mind. A British man fell in love with a Portuguese girl who cannot speak English. What is amazing is that the two, who had the language barrier, had communication in mind. All the ten stories seemed to be independent, but they are somehow related to each other.
What I have learned from this movie is that love actually is all around. Nowadays, with the tremendous pressure, people seem to be colder and are growing apart from others, and the world seems to be full of complaints and hate. However, when that disaster descended on September 11th, 2001, people in the building, who clearly knew they were dying, did not leave any words of hate to this world. In their last calls, they told their friends and families how much they loved them and how much they appreciated this world. This has inspired me a lot and has made me believe that love actually is all around.

Blog8 Positive Effects of Korean Dramas on My Life

I love Korean dramas. Although they always waste a lot of my time and they always make my life disordered, I still love them. I used to blame my faults on those attractive TV series because they are so easy to get addicted to. However, now I think it was quite unfair for them to be blamed on as I truly enjoyed myself when appreciating them. Also, they actually benefit my life in many aspects. Most importantly, I can know all kinds of life experiences as every TV play depicts a group of people. Some of them are extremely rich, while some of them are poor without a decent job. When I am watching a play, I can get the feeling that I was that person and I am experiencing all the stories. After appreciating those dramatic life experiences, I understand that we do not know how life will treat us in the future. Besides, life is unfair. However, the only thing we can change is ourself. No matter what situations we are in, the ending of a story will always lie in our personal choices and attitudes. Therefore, those TV dramas provide me with a lot of courage to face difficulties in my life because I believe the ending will be happy like what I saw in the play as long as I am brave enough. Understanding the benefits of Korean dramas, I can finally feel comfortable appreciating them without guilt.

Blog 7 The Road Not Taken

Last week, I read the poem “The Road Not Taken” in English class. Although I have read it before in Chinese class when I was in middle school, this time the poem resonates strongly with my experience and leads me to more thoughtful consideration. When I read this poem in the middle school, I tried to understand what the writer wanted to express with the explanation of our teacher. Although at that age I was aware of how choices can make all the difference, it is not until now that I manage to grasp the really meaning of this poem. Before the National College Entrance Examination, the only thing I need to worry about is my study. I never spent much time and efforts in making choices for my life because there is nothing to hesitate about. However, everything became so incredible and changeable after the exam. Suddenly, I was forced to face so many options to choose. Just like what said in the poem, I chose the way less traveled by, the way with numerous incredible factors. Even though I am not sure whether this mysterious but charming way can lead to my wanted life, I will do my best to face all the challenges and enjoy all the happiness that this way provides. As the poem says, maybe one day I shall be telling the old story with a sigh: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by.

Blog8 : About my life here.

Blog 8

This is my last blog in the bridging course. Although I want to follow the theme of this week, I find it will be a pity if I do not summarize my experiences of the months in Singapore. I think my meaningful summary is much better than a Chinglish poem—the theme of this week. Let me recall the days in Singapore…

I have spent a large part of my time in photography. I did not really get interested in photography before I came to Singapore. I even did not know how to make my camera function in a way I wanted, let alone express what I felt in the pictures. All my knowledge of photography is quite plain, and I was a seeker of beautiful places, for I thought only splendid sceneries deserved a shot. However, then I realized that I should not owe my bad pictures to the reason that the scenery was not beautiful enough, but for the fact that I did not have sharp eyes to appreciate beauty. In fact, beauty is everywhere, as long as I can distinguish by my eyes. This gives me a bright inspiration in my way of thinking—if I change a way to look, I will get a better view.

My classmates and hostel mates are all very kind to me, so I do not ever feel lonely in this unfamiliar country. Apart from my classmates and hostel mates, I also know a lot of local friends from VCF and churches. They are very hospitable and humorous. They give me full confidence to have an enjoyable living here. Learning from their great characteristics, I also desire to be a person of better personality, so I now try to read bible and believe God. Before I came to Singapore, I was a freethinker. Now I think I will be a Christian in the future. This is one of the biggest changes of myself here.

As for my study, although I always make grammatical mistakes and mess up my expressions, I feel elation that I have made some improvements. I know how to compose an essay, how to make ppt, how to prepare for a debate…Before I came here, I dare not speak out English, but now communicating in English is not as difficult as it was before, more importantly, I have a desire to practice more; this is the reason why I always want to be the first people to read in the class when my teachers ask who wants to read first. In addition, one thing I must mention is that I have successfully finished reading a book in English--<<Harry Potter>>. This may not be a great achievement for others, but at least for me, it was a milestone. Now I proceed to try on more English written books.

Living in Singapore has greatly widened my horizons. I am getting accustomed to a new lifystyle. I have been greatly inspired by the academic ambience in NUS. I wonder how great I will feel when I graduate in this top university. The future is bright for me, as long as I enjoy every moment that I live in a positive way.

Essay 9

When is the last time that you got in touch with your friends in China?
How often do you contact with your best friends in senior high school?
What about best friends in middle school?
Long time ago, when I enjoyed friendship for the first, I believed that its a permanent treasure. At that time, I liked to fancy a scene that all my friends and I will gather together, share out experience, and enjoy our time one day when we grow up. Meanwhile, everything I read and learned showed long live the friendship. As a consequence, I drew a conclusion when I was in primary school: Friendship cannot be declined by time, cut off by separation, or destroyed by  any objective elements.
Before long, I graduated form primary school. Every students in my class changed phone number and home address with others, and then we entered different junior high schools. I did not have the habit of writing letters or making phone calls if unnecessary, and neither did my friends, so I started losing contact with them. However, I hardly realized anything because I enjoyed studying and playing with my new friends. As a result, I never tried to call and contact with some of my best friends in primary school for three years. I think gap appeared at that time.
In senior high, situation became worse. Though I began to feel bad for not contacting them for the last three years, though I realized the importance of friendship, though I wanted to change the situation, I could not be brave enough to say hello to them by a simple phone call. The reason was that we no longer shared the same hobbies and topics after growing up in different environments,, so there were always silence on the phone, and it was embarrassed. Fortunately, I made more new friends in senior high school.
The same situation took place in university, too.
Do we have to say goodbye to old friends?
Should we amuse with new people and bore with the old?
I do not think so. I still believe that friendship cannot be declined by time, cut off by separation, or destroyed by any objective elements, for I have that kind of friends. Now I feel regret for not keeping in touch with my friends when I was young, and it is hard to relive those relationships. So I will treasure every friend from now on, and make them permanent.

Blog 9: When I was ill here...

Last several days, I suffered from a common disease: fever. It was caused by a cold night( because of the geiliable air conditioner) and a heavy rain the next day. Thus, yesterday I didn't go to NUS and went to the clinic. After that, I spent most of the day sleeping.

To be frank, it was the first time that I had felt helpless since I came to this unfamiliar country. Mum was not by my side. She couldn't take care of me, or cook special food for me, or comfort me as she would always do. My best friends were far away from me, otherwise they would come to visit me. What I could do was going to the clinic alone with my suffering body and slept all the day. After being here for almost half a year, I came to start to understand the difficulty of living abroad alone. It's Akins of lonely, a kind of helplessness.

However, there were something that warmed my heart. I published a message on my RenRen to describe my situation. Before long, I received many replies that came from my friends and classmates. I also received several SMSs, some of which were from China. Though the words in these messages were simple and similar, they still gave me a lot of comfort, which added much happiness to the dark day.

After this, I believe in friendship more firmly and confirmed again how important a role a friend can play in our life. Apart from your parents and other family members, friends are the ones you can rely on when you are confused about the future; they are the ones you ca turn to when you need help;they are the ones stand by you when you feel alone. They are the ones walk towards you when the rest of the world walks away.

So, cherish your friends and let them know.
